PURPOSE:To provide the projection type EL display designed to stabilize a hysteresis by constituting a screen part of a laminated structure including photoconductive film layers and a transparent electrode layer. CONSTITUTION:The screen part 20 is constituted by using the EL element for which a hysteresis effect is utilized. This EL element is interposed with the respective photoconductive film layers (for example CdS) 8, 9 between the transparent electrode layer 2 and a first insulating layer 3 and between a second insulating layer 5 and a rear surface electrode layer 6. A dispersion type is used for a light emitting film layer 4 to realize a large screen. The screen part 20 is similar to an ordinary MISIM type EL element and is applied with a certain specified bias voltage from a power source section 7. The voltage to be applied on the light emitting film layer 4 is increased by the effect of the respective photoconductive film layers 8, 9 when light is projected in this state from a projecting unit section. Light emission begins when the voltage above the threshold voltage is attained. The on-state is maintained by the emitted light once the light is emitted. The light emission is sustained.
