New linear polycyclic cpds. are of formula (I), where R1-2 = 1-16C alkyl or 2-16C alkenyl or alkynyl, opt. with F substit(s)., in which non-adjacent CH2 gp(s)., not attached to M, may be replaced by O or S, or a chiral -CH(Z)R3 gp.; Z = F, Cl, Br, CN, CF3, CCl3, D or 1-6C alkyl; R3 = 1-16C alkyl, in which non-adjacent CH2 gp(s). may be replaced by O or S; at least one of R1 and R2 is chiral; M1-5 = -O-, -S-, -COO-, -CO- or -O-Q-COO-; Q = 1,4-phenylene, diphenyl-4,4'-diyl, 2,6-naphthylene, 1,4-cyclohexylene, pyrimidin-2,5-diyl, pyridin-2,5-diyl, 1,3,4-thiadiazol-2,5-diyl or thiazol-2,5-diyl; Ar1, Ar3 and Ar4 = a 1,4-phenylene, diphenyl-4,4'-diyl, 2,6-naphthylene or pyridin-2,5-diyl gp. substd. by X and Y in the 1,2-, 1,4- or 1,6-positions or an unsubstd. pyrimidin-2,5-diyl, 1,3,4-thiadiazol-2,5-diyl or thiazol-2,5-diyl gp.; X = F, Cl, Br, CN, NO2 or SO2R4; Y = NH2, NHR4, NR4R5, OR4, R4 or SR4; or one of X and Y = H; Ar3 = phen-1,2,4-triyl, diphenyl-3,4,4'-triyl, naphth-1,2,6-triyl, pyridin-2,3,5-triyl or pyrimidin-2,4,5-triyl gp.; R4-5 = 1-6C alkyl, which may be pt. of a ring system, or 2-6C alkenyl or alkynyl; A = (CH2)n (n = 1-6) in which one CH2 gp., not attached to M, may be replaced by -O-, -S-, thiazol-2,5-diyl, pyridin-2,5-diyl, pyrimidin-2,5-diyl, 1,3,4-thiadiazol-2,5-diyl or 1,4-phenylene; and B = F, Cl, CN, -NO2, -SO2R4 or -M1-R1.
