The invention does this by trimming away (11) the paper beyond the edge to be protected, from the outside down to about 0.1 mm from the coating (12), to leave a strip (9) of paper which is then bent back over the edge to be protected and sealed to the outer coating. The container seam is positioned such that sealing it also seals the coating on the bent-back strip.
