<p>Method and apparatus for improving the characteristics of the surface effects recorded on an optical disc (1), including a writing light beam source (7), an optical modulator (11) for modulating the intensity of the writing beam (9) of light above and below a threshold level of a moving recording medium (1) in response to a modulator drive signal (10) for recording information on the medium (1) the light beam (9) being capable of forming a track of surface effects in the moving recording medium (1) when the writing beam (9) is above threshold and incapable of forming surface effects (1) when the writing beam (9) is below threshold, a rectangular waveform having leading and trailing edges to modulate the writing beam (9) to a peak power above threshold and to a minimum power level below thresholds, respectively, in order to maintain a prescribed duty cycle in the track of surface effects in the moving recording medium (1).</p> |
