The voltage from the inversion system (5) is supplied to the discharge lamp (9) enclosed in a holder (10). Potential adjusting means are provided, which have an earth connection lead (21) for earthing the holder (10). The potential of the holder is adjusted to a predetermined value.The step up voltage circuit (2) produces the DC voltage in such a manner, that the average illumination potential of the discharge lamp is smaller than the predetermined value. The step up voltage circuit (2) has a polarity inversion step up circuit for delivering a DC voltage of a negative value.
