The system is driven via a hydraulically-operated clutch (18), typically supplied from the engine lubricating-oil system (14). The pipe (16) to the clutch from the latter can contain a solenoid valve (24) actuated by a control circuit (26) working with the steering gear. This can be operated by a sensor (34) in the steering wheel (32), detecting when a predetermined torque is exceeded. The clutch can be actuated by a ram.
