The apparatus reduces the volume of VCR deck by installing a moving plate (4) on the main plate (1) on which a head drum (2) and a capstan are mounted, and by making the tape contact with the drum just after the loading. The apparatus includes the main plate, the moving plate, a cassette housing (6) for inserting a cassette on the moving plate, a pair of guide post (8)(8a) and a pair of guide rollers (9)(9a) for exact contact of the tape to the drum, a roller (11) rotating with the capstan shaft for compressing the tape onto the drum, a spring (11) for tensioning the tape by the roller.
