The waveguide fibre has refractive index delta of inner core region higher than refractive index delta of outer core region and a reduced diffusion tail at the interface between the outer core region and the cladding region of the fibre. The diameter of the inner core region is less than about 60 per cent of the diameter of the entire core region of the fibre. Optionally there may be provided a ring at the outermost edge of the outer core region in which the refractive index delta is higher than the remainder of the outer core region.
