PURPOSE: To provide an apparatus and a method more excellent in modification efficiency of a gaseous mixture containing NOx. CONSTITUTION: Channels of a main body 12 of a honeycomb structure are alternately filled with a filler material 14 to form alternate array of filler cells and open cells. Before it reaches the activating temperature of a catalyst, car fumes entered at an inlet end 18 are passed as shown by the arrow (a) through the open cells so that hydrocarbons in them are adsorbed on the filler material 14. When the catalyst is heated to the activating temperature, the adsorbed hydrocarbons are desorbed, passed through porous walls, entered the open cells and converted into harmless substances by the catalyst applied on wall surfaces of the open cells. |
