PURPOSE:To uniformly disperse a staple fiber and obtain a preform body without breakage and fracture of the fiber by mixing a carbon staple fiber with a matrix material in a dispersion medium containing a thickener added thereto, drying the resultant dispersion mixture and removing the dispersing medium. CONSTITUTION:A thickener (e.g. cellulosic esters, a polyorganic acid ester or an alginate) in an amount of 0.005-0.5 pt.wt. is added to 1 pt.wt. dispersing medium (water, alcohols, ketones, etc.) to provide 100-100000cP viscosity at the normal temperature. Stable fiber of carbon fiber and a matrix material are stirred and mixed in the dispersion medium at a temperature exceeding the solidifying point of the dispersion medium and below the boiling point thereof under a reduced pressure. The resultant dispersion mixture is formed and dried to remove the dispersion medium. Thereby, the objective preform body in which the staple fiber and the matrix material containing the thickener are uniformly dispersed is obtained. |
