Date Apr. 4, 1991.The present invention produces very stable, covalently bonded separation substrates for separations application such as liquid and gas chromatography as well as capillary zone electrophoresis. An intermediate substrate is prepared which has hydride species on the substrate surface. These hydrides preferably are further derivatized by the catalytic addition of organic compounds bearing a terminal vinyl group. The final surface modification contains closely packed, direct carbon linkages that are stable.
