<p>An effluent treatment system (1) includes an effluent treatment medium (11, 20) comprising a homogenous mixture of peat and fibre in a ratio of typically 10:90 by volume. A layer (21) of mussel shells having a bulk density of about 300g/litre is laid on top of the medium (11) to a depth between 2 cm and 25 cm. The layer (21) promotes the flow of effluent to the treatment medium (11, 20) and prevents accumulation of solids on the medium (11, 20) particularly at high hydraulic loadings. <IMAGE></p> |
