The spacers are continuous or broken wires or rods, and pref. consist of glass or quartz. The spacers wires may be circular, polygonal or have other cross-section and may be adhered, welded or sealed to one or both glass plates. The spacers are perpendicular to the glass plates. In one configuration, a parallel set of wires is attached to each plate, the two sets being perpendicular, the two crossing sets of spacers (3,4) together define the appropriate separation for the plates.
