The stair lift for the disabled consists of a seat (13) which travels up or down stairs by means of a rack (3) and a drive mechanism (20). The system incorporates a guide (4) associated with the rack and comprising a rail (35), and a stabiliser (16) to keep the seat horizontal comprising an articulated panel linked to a reel (15) by an articulated arm.The rack has an elongated rectangular C-section made from a metal strip which is cut along one edge to form teeth, and then bent into the C-shape with its teeth meshing with a driven pinion (20a).
