The vending installation has a display (2) carrying empty packaging (50) for each of the items on sale. The customer removes the empty packaging from the display and carries it to a delivery unit (3), placing the packaging where it can be read by the delivery unit to identify the item required.The distributor has a mechanism that is able to select the required item from storage racks that are hidden from the customer. The selected items are carried on a conveyor to an opening (36,37) in the front of the delivery unit. A display (32) allows the unit to deliver messages to the customer. The entire unit is controlled by a computer that maintains stock records in addition to managing delivery.
