Multicolour printing from transfer tape esp. on to memory chip card

The printhead (2) carries a row of dots (3) contacted by the transfer tape (4) on which the necessary pigments and chemical reagents for multicolour printing and e.g. protective coating are carried in active areas (4a,4b). The active areas are sepd. by markings (46) detectable by a sensor (47).The card (C) is conveyed (15) from a feeder station (11) to the central station (10) at the speed of the tape. After each operation it is held clear of the central station while the tape is advanced to bring the next active area into position.
