A sensor element for determining the amt. of oxygen dissolved in a sample is made by (a) mixing a fluorescent reagent (I) with a silicone oil (II) which has a molecular wt. of 6,700-80,000; (b) heating the mixt. at a temp. of 150-350 deg.C and (c) prior to or during the heating step (b), adding an optical insulating material (III) into the fluorescent reagent, the (III) forming an optical insulating layer that protects the fluorescent reagent from outside light but allows diffusion of oxygen to the sensor. (I) is chosen e.g. from polycyclic aromatic homocyclic and heterocyclic cpds., esp. decacyclene (ia) or perylene (Ib). (II) pref. has a molecular wt. of 15,000-30,000 and is esp. a mixt. of dimethyl silicone, methyl hydrosilicone, diphenyl silicone and methylphenyl silicone. A crosslinking agent e.g. an organic peroxide or a diazo cpd. may be incorporated to promote crosslinking during the heating stage. (III) is pref. graphite powder.
