A compressor wheel (18) is driven by a switched reluctance motor (19) for generating a flow of system conditioning air in a closed system conditioning air loop. The loop includes a load heat exchanger (12), a further compressor wheel (21), a heat exchanger (23) and a turbine wheel (15). The other side of the heat exchanger (12) is connected by a duct (26) for receiving warm recirculated load air from an enclosure (11).Conditioned load air is delivered from the load heat exchanger (12) to the enclosure through a duct (32). Speed of the motor and hence, the compressor wheel is controlled by an electronic control unit (ECU) (36) to change the pressure drop across the turning wheel so as to vary the thermal capacity of the system conditioning loop. The ECU receives signals from temp sensors (37 and 39) located in resp. ducts (32 and 14), one or more temp sensors (34) located internally of the enclosure, and a temp sensor (48) sensing air temp ambient of the enclosure.
