The invention relates to the use of special inhibitors in pickling acids, which can be eliminated during the reprocessing of the spent pickling acids by conventional processes, and to pickling acids which contain these inhibitors, and also to a process for cleaning spent acidic metal pickles containing these inhibitors, which is characterised in that the inhibitor/activator system present is removed before the further processing.
