A code carrier carries a track with a number of identical markings arranged at equal intervals and a second track with a reference. A sensor containing two detectors associated with the individual tracks is connected to an evaluation device.Either the code carrier or the sensor is movable. The second track has distinguishable markings or markings at different intervals. The measurement position is determined from the sequence of markings on the second track.
