A pultruded composite member (23) having a longitudinal axis comprising a plurality of reinforcing fibers in a solid polymer matrix, said member having embedded at least one functional feature having been incorporated therein during its manufacture. The manufacturing process comprises providing a heated die (17) and a bath (14) of liquid polymer, simultaneously pulling continuous reinforcing fibers (12) and at least one carrier tape (25) with the functional feature on it through the liquid bath (14) and into and through the heated die (17).
