A process for esterifying a polymer containing carboxyl(ate) groups, by maintaining the polymer at 0 DEG C. to 200 DEG C., where the counterion for the carboxylate groups is a selected ammonium or sulfoxonium ions. Such processes are useful for preparing improved films and coatings, particularly automotive coatings.
