The circuit detecting the class of tapes whether it is normal or super and the degree of deterioration generates the sharpness control signal and the autotracking signal. The circuit comprises a double peaking amplifier (11) where the peak signals are detected in each frequency bandwidth of the normal and the super tape; buffer means (12,14) stabilizing the output signal of the amplifier (11); DC voltage converters (13,15) converting the output signal of buffers (12,14) into DC voltage; an adder (16) adding the output of the first converter (13) and the second converter (15); a clamping means (18) generating the sharpness control signal; a first comparator (17) producing rental signal; a second comparator (19) detecting the class of video tapes.
