The array consists of a central control element (T) and a number of protruding element. The array can act as transmitter or receiver. A reference signal is sent out from the control element (T) to every element (E1 to E7) of the transducer assembly.A message signal, modulated onto the reference signal, is sent out on a spherical wavefront from the control unit to each element, when the assembly is acting as a transmitter; the message modulated on the reference signal is sent in the other direction when the assembly is acting as a receiver.
