PURPOSE:To prevent generation of uncomfortable sense due to abrupt rise of the lightness when the illumination is lighted by a person who has adapted to the darkness of the nighttime environment. CONSTITUTION:A memory part 7 is provided in which the relationship between the lightness adaption characteristic of a person and the requisite illuminance. A clock signal given by a clock generation part 6 operated from a switch part 1, a signal from a photo-sensor 2, and a signal from the memory part 7 are fed to a calculation part 3, which calculates the dimming control signal so that the dimming can be made at an illumination level corresponding to the lightness adaption characteristic of the user from the instance when the illumination is lighted up. With this control signal, a dimming control part 4 adjusts the light source part 5 so as to preclude generation of uncomfortable sense due to abrupt rise of the lightness.
