Process for prodn. of polyarylenevinylene polymers of formula (I) or (II) in which n = the degree of polymerisation A = NH, S, O or Se and R1, R2, R3 and R4 = H or substituents such as alkyl, alkoxy, sulphonate or alkylsulphonate, comprises the stages of (A) preparing a sulphonium-contg. precursor of the polymer (I) having the formula (Ia) or (Ib) or a sulphonium-contg. precursor of the polymer (II) having the formula (IIa) or (IIb) in which R5 and R6 = alkyl gps. and X = halogen; and (B) irradiating the precursor (Ia, Ib; IIa, IIb) with an ion beam.
