<p>This is a method for separating conjunct polymers and sulfolane form a mixture containing polymers, sulfolane, and hydrofluoric acid comprising the sequential steps of: (a) a spent alkylation catalyst (10) is stripped in a tower (20) with a stripping gas (22) to provide an intermediate stream (26) containing less than about 30 percent hydrofluoric acid by weight; (b) withdrawing the intermediate stream (26), cooling in a heat exchanger (30) and gravitationally separating into a sulfolane-enriched stream (47), a conjuct polymer enriched stream (42), and a solids stream (44); (c) cntacting sulfolane-enriched stream (47) with a polar extration solvent (52) in an extractor (50) to provide an extract stream enriched in sulfolane (56) and a raffinate stream (54) enriched in conjunct polymer; (d) stripping the polar extraction solvent from said sulfolane-enriched extract stream (52) in a stripping tower (60) with a gas (62); (e) recovering sulfolane (66) and drying in a molecular sieve drier (80).</p> |
