To avoid overloading and wear on the belt (1) in the upper ranges of tension and speed, the hydrostatic motor (3) acting on the driving drum (2) can be assisted by a smaller motor (5) operating in parallel on the normally undriven drum (4).The motors are connected to cutout devices (6, 7) and changeover switches (8, 9) operated from a common control unit (10) with the aid of a central controller (13) and sensors of hydrostatic pressure (11) and rotational speed (12) of the main motor.
