The belt drive is for moving backwards and forwards heavy objects, esp. slides in machine tools, by means of a tractive component (11), whereby in a bearer (21) of plastics several plate-shaped lamellas (32,32',32'',32''') of a metallic material are loosely laid as a lamella packet (31).The bearer (21) is C-shaped in cross-section and the lamella packet is laterally partially engaged by arms (23,24) on a brace (22) of the bearer. In the bearer, pref. in the brace joining the arms, draw cords are arranged running in the axial direction of the lamella packet. The draw cords are of steel and are located in a plane parallel to the lamellas and equally spaced in the brace (22) of the bearer (21).
