A material processing apparatus (10) includes a casing (52) having outer and inner spaced walls (54, 56) forming an airtight vessel (12) inside of the inner wall (56) and a channel (38) between the outer and inner walls (54, 56) surrounding the vessel (12) for containing a flow of coolant fluid. The vessel (12) contains a first chamber (14) having an inlet (58) and a second chamber (16) connected in communication with the first chamber (14) and having an outlet (42). The materials are pyrolyzed in the first chamber (14) and are oxidized in the second chamber (16) and then discharged therefrom. The vessel (12) is separated into first and second units (48, 50) with the first chamber (14) being disposed in the first unit (48). The second chamber (16) has primary and secondary sections (16A, 16B) for oxidizing materials in two successive stages. The first chamber (14) and the primary section (16A) of the second chamber (16) are disposed in the first unit (48), whereas the secondary section (16B) of the second chamber (16) is disposed in the second unit (50). |
