The recording/reproducing device comprises a probe electrode (102), and recording medium (3) opposite to it, so that a tunnel current can flow when a voltage is applied between them. The apparatus comprises either one or both of devices for applying a writing voltage between the probe and the record medium, and for applying a reading voltage between the electrode and recording medium to detect information which has been recorded. The medium comprises organic molecules which have both a group contg. only sigma electron levels and a group contg. pi electron levels. It may comprise a monomolecular film of an organic compound or a film built up from a number of monomolecular layers of an organic compound e.g. a dye.
