In order to optically determine with local resolution biological tissues density distributions a scanning unit is provided which allows a locally limited beam of rays to be positioned in a defined manner on the transmission side and the transmitted radiation components to be recorded with local resolution. The actual signal processing consists of evaluating on the detector side changes in the scattered light distribution, i.e. changes in the phase and amplitude of the high-frequency modulated radiation.
