751,078. Centrifuges. SANDOZ, Ltd. Aug. 31, 1954 [Sept. 4, 1953], No. 25263/54. Class 23. A centrifuge rotor R having a maximum diameter intermediate its ends is cooled by supplying gas towards both ends of the rotor and by removing the gas from the rotor in a plane containing the maximum diameter. In the construction shown, which is suitable for a rotor speed of 15,000 r.p.m., the gas is ambient air which enters the rotor casing M through apertures C, E and which is discharged through apertures S. The rotor is spaced from its drive motor A by a distance at least equal to half the length of the rotor. At least one fan F driven by the motor may be provided to increase the circulation. In a modification, which is suitable for a rotor speed of 60,000 r.p.m., the gas is hydrogen or helium flowing in a closed circuit, the casing being enclosed by a further casing and cooling elements being provided between the casings or within the inner casing. |
