<p>A compact structure is provided for a continuously variable transmission (10), which provides a more direct application of load (LF) and control forces at the pivot trunnion (36, 38). Load forces (LF) are produced from within the pivot trunnion (36, 38), providing more direct control over load forces and their effect on contact surfaces between traction rollers (26, 28) and toric discs (20, 22, 30, 32). Control forces which establish the desired transmission ratio are applied to pivot trunnion (36, 38) in a manner which substantially eliminates twisting and squirming of the support rollers (48). High efficiency in operation, and improved assembly is provided with the compact structure disclosed.</p> |
