The solid-state laser, pumped by laser diodes, has a piezoelectric film (12) in contact with the laser active medium (11), and with the catcher mirror (R3). An air gap (13) with a given length, is between the laser medium and the catcher mirror, to give a short length to give a longitudinal mode selection through an appropriate selection of mirror (R2,R2) reflectivity. The application of an electrical voltage at the piezoelectric film (12), selectively, gives a choice of separate laser junctions, Q-switches or tunable laser frequencies.The laser medium (11) is an optical pumped solid-state laser crystal or glass, or a semiconductor laser diode. In the event of tuning the laser frequency, the laser medium is shaped and coated that a resonator mode can be ensured by an external mirror. For Q-switches, and selection of separate junctions, the laser medium is shaped and coated to ensure a resonator mode.
