Motor vehicle steering column comprising a shaft 1 mounted in an outer column 2 fixed to the vehicle chassis 3. The upper steering column assembly 4 comprises a movable part 5 of shaft 1, and outer column 2, fitted with fixing lug 6, which is connected to chassis 3 by a slideable mount 7. The slideable mount 7 has a sole plate 10 on the steering column side of the mounting.
