In an electrochemical energy storage cell comprising an anode compartment separated from a cathode compartment by a solid electrolyte separator 3 and having a metal casing 3, a sulphur electrode in the cathode compartment comprising an electron-conductive zone 6M and an insulating zone 6V which adjoins the solid electrolyte 3, the zones 6M and 6V are bonded together without gaps via their adjoining surfaces and the electron-conductive zone 6M is penetrated by ion conductive paths 6F of the insulating zone. The insulating zone 6V may comprise a web formed from glass and/or ceramic fibres, and the electron-conductive zone a graphite felt mat, the web and the mat being need led together such that the glass and/or ceramic fibres penetrate at least partially into the graphite felt mat.
