The method is applied to indicate the presence of a module with each insertion position for the latter provided by a carrier board (2) identified by two respective frequencies denoting the position location relative to the carrier board and denoting the specific carrier board.Each module has an evaluation circuit for these two frequencies for generating a corresponding position code transferred to a central point. Pref. each carrier board is fitted with a supply group (7) including a frequency generator.
