A random sample of finished sheets is selected by an automatic sampler from a production print run of a sheet fed press; data pertaining to at least one measured press parameter pertaining at the time of selection of each sheet is logged, and each sheet is coded to enable the corresponding logged data to be associated therewith. As described, a controller (8) (which may either be a part of the machine control or separate therefrom) commands the machine delivery conveyor (7) to deposit sample sheets on a separate pile (9) whereat a print head (10) (which may be an ink jet) encodes each sheet as it arrives. Machine parameters are logged at the time of each selection, and the ammassed data can be output in conventional manner (e.g. on a V.D.U. or computer printer). As shown (Fig 1) the sample sheets cannot easily be removed during printing, and an alternative delivery is described which delivers to an accessible stack. <IMAGE> |
