This invention provides certain benzenesulfonamide derivatives of formula (I) and methods for using them in the treatment of susceptible neoplasms in mammals. Also provided are certain novel pharmaceutical formulations employing these benzenesulfonamide derivatives in combination with a carrier, and processes for preparing the benzenesulfonamide derivatives. wherein: R<1> is -NO2, or -NRaRb, where Ra and Rb are independently selected from the group consisting of hydrogen and C1-C6 alkyl; and R<2> and R<3> are independently selected from the group consisting of hydrogen, halo, C1-C6 alkyl, and trifluoromethyl, provided that no more than one of R<2> and R<3> can be hydrogen; with the proviso that if R<1> is -NO2 or -NH2, neither R<2> nor R<3> can be hydrogen; or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt or solvate thereof.
