Heat accumulating material comprising CaCl2 and SrCl2 crystals containing about 5 to about 50 % by weight SrCl2 based on the weight of the mixture can be charged (dehydrated) under relatively mild conditions of about 60 DEG C and 10 to 20 % relative humidity. Preferably, the mixture is co-crystallized to form crystals of less than about 100 nm size in the pores of a thermally inert porous matrix such as silica gel.
