3-phenylpropionic acid derivatives of the general formula I <IMG> I where R1 is hydrogen or halogen, R2 is halogen, R3 is unsubstituted or halogen-, C1-C4-alkoxy- or C1-C4-alkylthio-substituted C2-C6-alkyl, C5-C7-cycloalkyl-substituted C1-C6-alkyl, further C5-C7-cycloalkyl, C3-C6-alkenyl or C3-C6-alkynyl or, together with R4, a C2-C4-alkylene chain, R4 is hydrogen or unsubstitutad or halogen-, C1-C4-alkoxy-, C1-C4-alkylthio- or C5-C7-cycloalkyl-substituted C1-C6-alkyl; C3-C7-cycloalkyl: unsubstituted or halogen-substituted C3-C6-alkenyl or C3-C6-alkynyl or halogen or R4; togethor with R5 and the carbon atom of this substituent, is C3-C6-cycloalkyl which may be interrupted by an oxygen or a sulfur atom, R5 is unsubstituted C1-C6-alkyl or halogen-, C1-C4-alkoxy- or C1-C4-alkylthio-substituted C2-C6-alkyl cyano or acyl (COR6) or alkoxycarbonyl (CO2R7), R6 denoting C1-C6-alkyl or, together with R4, a C3-C5-alkylene chain and R7 denoting unsubstitutsd or halogen-, C1-C4-alkoxy- or C1-45-alkylthio-substituted C2-C6-alkyl or unsubstituted or C5-C7-cycloalkyl-substituted C1-C6-alkyl, further C5-C7-cycloalkyl, C3-C6-alkenyl or C3-C6-alkynyl, with the proviso that R1 and R4 do not simultaneously denote hydrogen when R5 is cyano or CO2R7, processes for their manufacture, and their use as herbicides.
