PURPOSE: To provide a means effective from an aspect of cost for controlling waste ink generated during the priming of the printing cartridge of an ink jet printer. CONSTITUTION: A waste ink separator 64 is used in an ink jet printer maintenance station 28 in order to control waste ink generated during the priming work of a printing head. The separator 64 is fundamentally constituted of a rigid chamber body 78 equipped with a side wall and a top wall having an inlet and an outlet therein, a chamber floor 76 constituted of a material having a high steam transition rate to permit moisture to pass and the foam material housed in the chamber body 78 and the floor to absorb and store waste liquid ink. The inside surface of the top wall of the chamber body 78 has parallel ribs 80 and these ribs provide a meandering floor passage between the inlet and outlet of the chamber body 78 around the foam material 72 and liquid ink is separated from air. |
