To produce a ceramic silicate-based or alumina-based moulding, a ceramic starting product, which contains clay, kaolin, soapstone and/or alumina, is mixed with a silicate-containing flux, the mixture is moulded to give a moulding and the moulding is heated and dense-sintered. The flux used consists at least partially of a preferably alkali-free glass frit, which starts to soften above 850 DEG C. Advantageously, an alkali-free borosilicate glass is used in quantities of from 0.1 - 20% by weight of the starting mixture. By means of this process, ceramic mouldings can, inter alia, be produced which consist of a glass phase and a crystalline fraction essentially containing Al2O3, the proportion of the glass phase being 22-34% by weight and consisting of 50-68% by weight of SiO2, 12-22% of Al2O3, 0.1-4.5% of Fe2O3, 0.1-13% of TiO2, 0.1-23% of CaO, 0.1-9% of MgO, 0-7% of Na2O, 0-11% of K2O, 0-9% of BaO and 0-23% of B2O3, and the crystalline proportion consisting of 1-25% of SiO2, 70-80% of Al2O3, 0.1-1% of Fe2O3, 0.1-3% of TiO2, 0.1-5% of CaO, 0.1-2% of MgO, 0-1.5% of Na2O, 0-2.5% of K2O, 0-2% of BaO and 0-5% of B2O3. |
