In order to manufacture a screw-cap drum (1) that can be used as a multi-use drum, a circular heating ring is installed on the rim (18) of the drum body (2) from above and a screw-cap cover (6) that has an annular extension (23) that is moulded onto the underside of the cover flange (17) and which is coaxial to the axis of the cover is placed on the heating ring. After a heating period that melts the annular extension (23) that is arranged on the cover flange (17) and the annular bead (26) that is formed on the drum rim (18), the cover (6) and the heating ring are raised. Then the cover (6) with the annular extension (23) is placed on the drum rim (18) under pressure and with the cover seal (16) pre-tensioned, in such a way that the annular extension (23) on the cover flange (17) is joined to the annular bead (26) on the drum rim (18) to form an annular closing piece (20) that connects the cover flange (17) and the drum rim (18) to each other. In order to recondition the screw-cap drum (1) after single or repeated use, the screw-cap cover (6) is separated from the wideneck drum body (2) by culling the connecting piece (20). The drum body (2) can then be converted to form a wide-neck drum with a simple cover and a clamping ring closure of sheet metal, or can be converted to form a drum with a screw-cap cover or a screw-cap drum with a welded-on or moulded-on screw-cap cover.
