Use of tetralin, o-nitrotoluene, 4-tert.butyltoluene (A), 1-2C alkyl benzoates or petroleum distillate fraction (B) of boiling range 180-210 deg.C as solvents in prepn. of mono- or dis-azo pigments by usual methods of condensation is new. USE/ADVANTAGE - Partic. (A) or (B) are used, in prepn. of hydroxynaphthoylamine monoazo pigments or bis(hydroxynaphthoyl or acetoacetyl)aminobenzene disazo pigments. These solvents are stable at high temp. and can be used repeatedly. They are replacements for chlorinated benzene solvents which gradually decompose to form chlorinated biphenyls, toxic dibenzodioxins, etc., and provide as good yields and as pure products as the chlorinated solvents.
