The line monitoring apparatus comprises a peak value detector for detecting a peak value from a down signal of a line amplifier, a power supplier for supplying an operating power, an automatic gain controller for controlling an amplification gain of the line amplifier, a signal generator for transmitting a transmitting data signal to a transmitting end of the down signal, and a switching circuit for comparing the peak value with a reference value and selectively supplying the operating power to the line amplifier and automatic gain controller, or the signal generator, thereby reducing unnecessary power consumption.
