The prodn. and treatment of glass wire according to which a multiplicity of threads of molten glass are drawn, flowing through a multiplicity of orifices arranged in the base of a die, in the form of one or more sheets of continuous filaments. The sheets of filaments then pass through a coating zone prior to being collected in one or more wires. The moisture content on the wire is controlled by drying the filaments by submitting the sheets of filaments to at least one current of air directed transversely to the direction of displacement of the filaments on at least a part of the distance crossed by the filaments between the coating zone and the collecting zone. The drying device used to implement this process is also claimed and comprises a two compartment box (17) that surrounds the sheets of glass filaments, the first part (23) being equipped with an air blower (18), an air drier (20) and an air heater (21). USE/ADVANTAGE - The process is used for the prodn. and treatment of glass wires and more partic. where these wires are to be coated to impart specific properties to the glass wire. The process allows the integration of the prodn. and treatment stages and allows the drying of the wires to be controlled. It allows an increased productivity for an enhanced efficiency whilst reducing the need for supplementary treatment operations. The process is thus more economic in both the prodn. and coating of such glass wires.
