The permanent electrode, for copper refining, has a cross beam (1) of a copper or aluminium profile, with one side bonded to a plate (2) of austenitic steel, titanium, nickel or a nickel alloy. The other side of the plate (2) carries the electrode plate (3). Also claimed is a mfg. process where the cross beam (1) and plate (2) are explosive welded together in a one-stage operation. The cross beam (1) has a rectangular profile, in a hollow or solid structure. The plate (2) covers most of the side surface of the beam (1). The electrode plate (3) is of austenitic steel, titanium, nickel or a nickel alloy, using the same material as the plate (2), and extends at right angles from the side of the beam (1) carrying the plate (2). The electrode plate (3) passes through the plate (2) into a groove in the side of the beam (1). The edge of the electrode plate (3) is pointed, to fit into a matching V-groove, with laser welding to hold the electrode plate (3) to the plate (2) with welded seams between the shaped edge and groove. The length of beam (1) and welded plate (2) can be cut into separate electrodes by sawing. USE/ADVANTAGE - The permanent electrode is used for copper refining by electrolysis. The electrode is simple to produce, has an improved current transfer, and a longer working life.
