System for determining the temperature distribution in a room or chamber, such as a cooling chamber (cold storage, refrigerating chamber), at least provided with a number of ultrasonic transducers arranged in a row on one side of the room, and a number of ultrasonic transducers arranged in a row on an opposite side. Both rows are substantially in one plane, each transducer emitting ultrasonic signals via direct sound paths to at least a plurality of transducers situated oppositely and receiving them therefrom. A control and processing unit is designed for driving the transducers and processing the output signals therefrom, the propagation times of the ultrasonic signals along the sound paths being determined as a function of the prevailing temperature, and the mean temperature along the path being determined by making use of the known geometry of the sound path and the ultrasonic propagation time determined. The rows of ultrasonic transducers can be arranged on opposite sides near an access opening of the room and may also be arranged in a plurality of planes. The ultrasonic transducers can be driven alternately, so that ultrasonic signals are emitted and received alternately by the one transducer and the other transducer of each pair.
